It’s the biggest Irish-based movie in years and is expected to bring droves of tourists from the US and other parts to the west coast of Ireland.
Starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, one of the main filming locations in the movie was a cosy old man’s pub called Devine’s Pub.
Inside this old fashioned boozer were some iconic scenes, where Colin’s character did his best to win back his friend, to no avail.
But if you’re heading to see the movie location, wouldn’t you like to have a drink there yourself? Even Taylor Swift does.
She was glowing about the movie during an interview with film director Martin McDonagh and how she would have liked to have visited the pub.
And there comes the bad news….
Where is the pub from The Banshees of Inisherin?
The pub no longer exists, sadly. It was made for the film and disassembled in the aftermath to preserve the beautiful surroundings it was set in.
It was however on Achill Island overlooking Cloughmore, one of the most scenic spots on the island – you can still visit though, there just won’t be a pub there.
Achill Tourism says: “Cloughmore, on the south-eastern corner of Achill Island, was the setting for JJ Devines pub (‘Jonjo’s’). The building was constructed – and later removed – by the film crew at this popular local beauty spot. It is the location for the publicity photo from the movie showing Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson’s characters talking at a wooden table outside the pub.”
Are there any similar pubs?
Yes, is the answer. There are a load of pubs on Achill Island and the majority of them will give you a feel like what you were hoping to get from JJ Devine’s.
They’ll all have good pints of Guinness, locals who aren’t all that different from some of the film characters and some traditional music – hopefully you won’t bump into any feuding friends are dismembered fingers however.
Lynott’s, McLoughlin’s and Mickey’s pubs are the three that we would say are closest to what you saw in the film so give them a try.
