A trip to Castlebar might be in your plans and if you’re looking for the best places to drink, we’ve got you covered right here.
The Mayo town is full of boozers including one that was once labelled by a national newspaper as having the best pint in Ireland, a big claim!
So if you’re looking for that good pint, a few cocktails, a sports bar or to watch a match, here’s our picks of where to try.
And if you think there’s somewhere we’re leaving out, let us know in the comments below.
John McHale’s – Knockthomas
One of Castlebar’s oldest pubs and the one that was previously labelled as having the best pint of Guinness in Ireland, while that’s very much subjective, you can be sure it is a quality pint if it’s even in the reckoning.
It’s also famous for serving a “meejum” of Guinness, which is a measure slightly less than a pint.
Inside it’s as traditional as it gets, an old man’s pub you might say, full of character, a good atmosphere and plenty of drinks to choose from.

Mick Byrne’s – Main Street
Located right in the centre of Castlebar, Mick Byrne’s is another traditional pub with quality pints, a good atmosphere and live music.
It’s a tourists dream if looking for a proper Irish pub but also usually a spot where you’ll find a good crowd given its popularity with the locals.
Friendly staff add to the many reasons to visit.
