Galway’s ever-popular Christmas market will open in just a few days time as the west of Ireland gets into the festive spirit.

As thousands of people make their way to Galway over the coming months, we’ve decided to put together a list of some of places very best pubs for a cosy pint during the winter.

The city is well-known for its traditional pub vibes – look at their best spots here – and they are just as good when it comes to making you feel warm even when it’s freezing outside.

Here are the pick of some of Galway’s cosiest spots – make sure to leave a comment on any places you think should be on here.

Freeney’s, High Street

Right, bang in the middle of Galway city you’ll find traditional old pub Freeney’s where you can be welcomed in for a seat beside a toasty fireplace.

The pub has a lovely warm feel and being on the Irish Whiskey Trail, you can be sure you’ll get a great hot whiskey in here to heat up after walking around on a cold winter’s night.

The Blue Note, William Street

Over on Galway’s West End, you’ll find one of the most historic pubs in the city and one perfect for a catch-up after wandering around the Christmas market and shops.

The Blue Note is snug-filled and the warm ambience is added to by the presence of the occasional dog, who you might even spot drinking ‘dog beer’ – which yes, does exist.

DJs and live music no matter what the night will add to the locations great vibes.

Tigh Neachtain, Cross Street Upper

A snug-filled cosy option since the 1800s, Tigh Neachtain has to be included in any list for cosy pubs to enjoy a Guinness or the drink of your choice as it approaches Christmas.

It is very well-known for its Christmas feels so don’t be surprised if you find it being quiet busy when you arrive.

Caribou, Woodquay

The dimly-lit set up makes the craft bar of the year 2023 a great option if you’re looking to heat up with some lovely pints after being out in the cold.

This spot is a bit more modern, rather than the other traditional spots we’ve put on this list, so if that’s your vibe, give it a look.

Great food here too.

Barr an Chaladh, Woodquay

Another spot in Woodquay but very different from our last recommendation – Barr an Chaladh has an open fire which everyone loves in the winter months and that authentic, traditional pub feel.

Live music in the ‘country pub in the city’ will help warm your heart as the fire warms your body – well worth a visit.

The Kings Head, High Street

Another traditional pub, another lovely fire to warm up your bones as you soak in the atmosphere at this popular spot right in the middle of The Latin Quarter.

History is all around you inside and the fine selection of drinks, hearty food and a wide choice of whiskey will make The Kings Head a throughly enjoyable choice for a Christmas drink.

Taaffes Bar, Latin Quarter

Taaffes is another brilliant traditional pub that should be on your list for good craic and a great time.

The historic building is home to exactly what you’re imaging a traditional Galway pub to be with a cosy interior, friendly atmosphere and good pints.

They’ve music every night of the week, bar food if you’re peckish and it’s usually busy with both locals and tourists.
